Mother channels grief over son's suicide into mission of mental health awareness
RED HOOK, New York -- In October 2018, Donna Thomas' life was changed forever when she lost her son James to his battle with mental health. He was just 19 years old.
Six years after his death by suicide, Donna still remembers James as he was: fun, adventurous, funny and kind.

After James lost his battle with depression in 2018, Donna turned her pain inwards and set out to provide resources for others that she did not have herself. She founded James' Warriors which aims to support, educate, and simply talk about suicide prevention.

New York mother channels grief into suicide prevention nonprofit
Donna Thomas said her son James was the life of a party around his friends – and a great son at home.
“He was a caring person. He always had me on my toes," she said.
So it left her devastated to try and pick up the pieces and continue living after he died by suicide at 19 years old. Thomas said he wasn’t diagnosed with a mental illness.
